Fall is the season of changing colors and leaves blowing away to fertilize the coming spring. For those who enjoy praying with nature and deepening relationship with God, the following guided meditation on the Hail Mary may become part of the season’s private devotions.
Preparing for the Hail Mary Fall Meditation
Set aside ten to twenty minutes for the meditation. Turn off the cell phone and inform family, friends, and others that you’ll be back soon. Literally put up the “don’t disturb” sign on your life.
Situate yourself outside in a comfortable place such as an outdoor prayer garden, a favorite bench at the park, or a secluded picnic table along a hiking trail. For those who enjoy nature from the comfort of inside, position a chair or pillow beside a window within view of a changing tree or other colored foliage.
Directions for an Autumn Guided Meditation using the Hail Mary
Be sure to have water handy and position the body comfortably before beginning to minimize distractions. Feel free to stop on any line of the prayer if needed for additional reflection or due to lack of time.
- Repeat the first line, “hail Mary, full of grace,” three times slowly to yourself. Notice the fall colors before you. Reflect on the leaves of color in your life, the many ways God has filled you with grace such as loving relationships, a satisfying career, exciting hobbies, and so on.
- Repeat the second line, “the Lord is with Thee,” three times carefully, regulating your breath to match the speed of the recitations. Imagine Jesus sitting beside you and feel the warmth and love He has for you and for all creation. Share with Jesus the blessing that most touches you and fills your heart with joy this day.
- Recite the Hail Mary’s third line, “blessed art Thou among women.” Jesus reaches for you and takes your hand. Like Mary, you are beloved and blessed.
- Savor the fourth line, “and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus,” as you breathe fully and deeply. Open your eyes and look up at the brilliant shades of fall in the foliage around you. The leaves will soon drop, and the bare tree will wait for new life. What gifts are you carrying that color your life with beauty and hope? How might offering these gifts to God change your life and the world?
- Breathe slowly and deeply three times before continuing the prayer. Speak the next line, “holy Mary, Mother of God” once. Mary stands before you, inviting you to offer your gifts to God and let that offering change you, as the birth of her Son changed the world. Bask in the Blessed Virgin’s presence as long as desired.
- Recite the last line, “pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death,” once. With every birth comes death. The tree that loses its leaves in autumn will be bare until spring. What will you lose now that you’ve offered yourself more deeply to God?
- Imagine Jesus and Mary sitting beside you, praying with you as you transition out of the meditation. When you are finished, say “Amen.”
Spend a few minutes enjoying the autumn nature scene before getting up and continuing with your day.
Variations of the Fall Hail Mary Guided Meditation
There are several ways to pray with this meditation. For some variety, experiment with any or all of the following:
- Include this meditation as a part of one’s regular daily prayers for increased relaxation and personal awareness of God’s presence in one’s life.
- To make this a weekly or monthly devotion, pray on just one line a day or week. After you’ve reflected on the line for the day, continue praying the rest of the “Hail Mary” slowly with deep breaths and close with the “Amen.”
- Include insights and observations in a spiritual journal for further reflection or sharing with your spiritual director, if applicable.
- Try this meditation with a spouse, close friend, or prayer group. A leader can read the text of the meditation as the group follows the instructions.
Indeed, the most important step is to pray this or any devotional exercise in a manner that works for you and connects you most deeply with the Blessed Virgin Mary and God. Listen to yourself, be creative, and enjoy your time in prayer with this or any tool at your disposal.
